Its seems that famed actor, activist, and singer Harry Belafonte wants to talk out his differences with Jay-Z. In the past Belafonte has been very critical of how he feels African American celebrities of today use their celebrity status. He has gone so far as to say celebrities like Hov and Beyonce had “turned their back on social responsibility”

Well Jay, didn’t take too kindly to this statement, and responded to it on “Nickels and Dime” a song off his new album ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ Hov rapped this,

‘fore Mr. Belafonte come and chop a nigga down
Mr. Day O, major fail
Respect these youngins boy,it’s my time now
Hublot homie,two door homie
You don’t know all the shit I do for the homies

Belafonte appeared on MSNBC, and explained that his statements were not particularly directed at The Carter’s

I have to also say that conflict was not from me as direct attack on Jay-Z and Beyonce…I was at a press conference in Switzerland. Questions were raised by the international press. They asked about comparisons between the artists and their social engagement of the past based on a film we were all watching, and what did I think about the way artists were responding earlier in my life and how they were responding today. And I made the observation that the highly powerful voice that Black America has. There is so much celebrity power that it was sad to see the collective of celebrity power had not been applied to bringing consciousness to the antiquities that we face

Belfonte went even further and extended an olive branch to The Carter’s saying that he would like to sit down with the couple. Talk about open dialogue. I hope Jay decides to sit down with Belafonte, that would be awesome.

I agree, it opens the door for dialogue I am almost certain Jay and Bey are very philanthropic and also socially responsible, what with them standing in support of Trayvon Martin’s parents. A lot of things go on behind the scenes that Mr. Bellafonte is not privy to.

Jay Z also working with the UN clean water initiative and the King opening that resource center for ppl to get back on their feet… I’m sure they do more but those things are NOT highlighted toward the public as much as Blue & their travel plans. Belafonte is from an era where there were only a few celebrities of color and they definitely were NOT bringing in the $$$ that the current acts are requiring. So their social involvement was important news to the public eye bc they were the minority and at that time America was still afraid of the black potential & force if the right person moved them. The times are just different… But I’m sure he doesn’t mean any harm. I feel he’s speaking on a collective effort of all celebrities of color. STAND TOGETHER The media didn’t shed too much light on 50 Cent when he was trying to feed a million ppl as much as his surviving 9 shots & alleged arson to his ex-girlfriend’s home… Media!!!! Thanks for shedding the light on something worth talking about!!! 🙂

Whut, say you?
