[Review] The Life of Pablo-Kanye West

Kanye West dropped his new album titled, The Life of Pablo(TLOP), exclusively on Tidal. Only after causing ruckus on Twitter with another one of his infamous rants(for publicity i’m sure). This time it was aimed at Wiz Khalifa, Amber Rose, and their son Bash. He later recanted his Twitter rant, he and Wiz squashed their beef. Amber Rose and Kim Kardashian are now Instagram besties*yawns and stretches* I guess all is well in Hollyweird. TLOP has 18 tracks, and y’all already know how I feel about albums with that many tracks, it’s too damn many! However, I expect nothing less from House Motha Kanye, he is all about the dramatics of it all. If nothing else I look forward to amazing production and the samples.
In recent years Kanye has been more famous for his antics and terrible fashions. I was hoping and praying that he would get back to the music with this new album, and he did just that with TLOP.  The album opens with, Ultralight Beam featuring The Dream, Kelly Price, Kirk Franklin, and Chance The Rapper. I knew as soon as I heard viral clip of a little girl praising the Lord little girl praising the Lord we were in for a treat. Between the choir and Kelly Price, this has to be one of my favorites on the album. Chance The Rapper also shines on this track. Famous features Rihanna and Swizz Beatz, and also includes one of the most inflammatory lines of the whole album:

“I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex, why? I made that bitch famous, I made that bitch famous…”

I can’t say I disagree with him on this, he didn’t completely make her, but you can’t deny that her star power sky rocketed after the whole VMA’s debacle. The Nina Simone sample makes this another one of my favorite tracks on the album. Feedback  gives me a flash back to the College Dropout album. Highlights is an uptempo that I enjoyed, and I need every bad b*tch up in Equinox, I need to know right now if you a freak or not? This song reminds me of “Good Life” Kanye.
The I Love Kanye freestyle is one of my favorite freestyles from the album, it reminds me  of Kanye before he went cray cray. Some of the other freestyles could have been left off. Christopher Maurice Brown shows us why we fell in love with him on Waves. This song is another one of my favorite tracks on the album the production is awesome. FML reminds me of “808 and Heartbreak” Kanye. I like the song because West reflects on some of his erratic behavior. The Weeknd’s voice normally wears me thin, but it fits on this song. On Real Friends I feel like Kanye hit the nail on the head regarding the current mindset of 30 somethings. The take home point of the song is, as we grow older the amount of people who are true friends decreases significantly. I really like this song because it speaks directly to me.
Wolves didn’t grab me, but I don’t hate it. 30 hours borrows J. Cole’s Note To Self format. West reflects on his rise to stardom and some of the pitfalls along way. This is song doubles as West’s thank you’s. No Parties In LA features Kendrick Lamar, and he makes me love the song. Facts & Fade I could have done without.
The Life of Pablo is everything that I was seeking and more. This album offers glimpses of Kanye West past. While it’s not a complete return to the “Old Kanye” he skillfully mixes in “New Kanye” with “Old Kanye”. The guest appearances, the production, and subject matter are all good on TLOP. While there are some missteps the album is solid. I would really be interested to see how this translates to the stage. TLOP is definitely worth a listen if you’re a Kanye West fan or not.
