BLACK EXCELLENCE: CHOKWE ANTAR LUMUMBA BECOMES MAYOR-ELECT OF JACKSON, MISS.

Chokwe Antar Lumumba is now mayor-elect of Jackson, Miss., beating Republican opponent Jason Wells with 98 percent of the vote. He won in a landslide victory. Lumumba ran on a progressive platform that included creating a civilian law enforcement review board, reforming public school education pedagogy and prioritizing businesses owned by people of color for city contracts.
Lumumba said at the King Edward Hotel on Tuesday night while addressing his victory, “We have a lot of work to do. If you have the best ideas, that’s what we’re moving with.”

Chokwe is the son of Mayor Choke Lumumba, who died suddenly in 2014 shortly after taking office. Like his father, younger Lumumba is known for his work is social justice. Chokwe is a graduate of Tuskegee University and Thurgood Marshall Law School of Texas Southern University. He is also married to Ebony and they have one child
