5 Things We Learned From The 2018 BET Awards

Kinfolks! The BET Awards come on last night the theme for the night was Blackanda *side-eye* As always the evening was full of highs and lows. Here I’ll give “5 Things We Learned From The 2018 BET Awards”

Jamie Foxx Is Out Of Touch

When it was announced that Jamie Fox was hosting this year’s awards I silently sighed, then I saw the commercial promoting the awards, and I loudly groaned. Jamie seemed to not have prepared much in the way of a script for the show and seemed to be coming off the top of his head. Many of his jokes fell flat, the audience wasn’t feeling him, and it was really painful to watch. Tiffany Haddish would have been a better choice if she had not hosted the MTV Movie & TV Awards last week. BET there is so many other talented comedians that could have hosted. That is not to say Jamie isn’t talented, but he’s a bit out of touch.

Nicki Minaj’s Must Go Back To Drawing Board IMMEDIATELY!

The self-proclaimed “Queen of Rap”(I’m Team Foxy Brown so that we’re clear) came out and recycled part of her SNL performance of “Chun Li,” and then segued into “Rich Sex” her new single. Let’s pause here, the song is trash and the performance reminded me of an amateur strip show. Onika rolled around the stage and cooed like Toucan Sam then she disappeared off the stage. 2 Chainz, YG, and Big Sean appeared seemingly out of nowhere to perform “Big Bank,” Then Onika showed back up in new costume on top of a horse to perform her verse. The performance was all over the place and Onika has decided to give us trash. Hopefully, this new album lives up to the hype because if this performance is any indication, “I’m good luv, enjoy.”

Anita Baker’s Tribute Was Surprisingly Good

Legendary Singer Anita Baker was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Of course, a singing tribute was necessary, but I was wondering who BET would choose to honor Anita. Jamie started off the tribute, honestly, we could have gone without him. Marsha Ambrosius sang “Caught Up In The Rapture,” she was decent, but I would have preferred Jazmine Sullivan or Lalah Hathaway. Ledisi sang “Sweet Love,” I don’t have anything bad to say about her, because she always delivers. Yolanda Adams sang “You Bring Me Joy,” and she honestly stole the show. She sang the entire f*ck out of the song, and I feel like she needs to go ahead record an R&B album. Also, I saw her in the audience singing the hook to Migo’s “Stir Fry”. I was disappointed that Anita didn’t perform, but she apparently was sick according to her post-show interview.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE H.E.R.! I have loved her from the moment I first heard her material. I was very impressed with the way she was marketed initially. No one knew what she looked like, so we were only able to judge her based on voice, which was genius! She performed two of my favorite songs, “Focus” & “Best Part”(featuring Daniel Caeser). H.E.R.’s stage presence and voice were amazing. Daniel, on the other hand, needs some work. She has one of best performances of the night. I really want to see her live.

Snoop Dogg Is A Master of Reinvention

Uncle Snoop has managed to stay relevant since he came onto the scene. He always finds a way to reinvent himself. He has released albums in so many different genres, most recently gospel. He manages to do this authentically. Snoops performed some of his old material and then performed “You” featuring Tye Tribbett and took the whole audience to church. I enjoyed his performance. Uncle Snoop is music legend and stands the test of time.

The 2018 Bet Awards all in all was a decent show, but Jamie Foxx can definitely stay home or sit in the audience next year, as most of his moments were cringe-worthy.
