From The Mouth of HOV: Jay-Z Explains Every Song On ‘4:44’

Kinfolks! Jay-Z set “The Internets” ablaze when he dropped ‘4:44’ at 12:01 a.m. EST time exclusively on Tidal. Ever since then there have been quotes, memes, and think pieces on who & what exactly Jay is talking about on each of the 10 songs on the album. I am a proponent of going straight to the source so without further ado Jay-Z breaks down each song on ‘4:44’:

“Kill Jay Z”

“The first song is called ‘Kill Jay Z’ and obviously, it’s not to be taken literal. It’s really about the ego. It’s about killing off the ego, so we can have this conversation in a place of vulnerability and honesty.”

“The Story of O.J.”
“‘The Story of O.J.’ is really a song about we as a culture, having a plan, how we’re gonna push this forward. We all make money, and then we all lose money, as artists especially. But how, when you have some type of success, to transform that into something bigger.”

“Smile”
“‘Smile’ is just what it is. There are gonna be bad times, and those bad times can do two things: they can get you in a place where you’re stuck in a rut, or it can make your future that much better because you’ve experienced these things.”

“Caught Their Eyes”
“‘Caught Their Eyes’ is a song that’s dealing with just being aware of your surroundings. There’s a line in it, and it says, ‘Your body language is all remedial, how could you see the difference between you and I?’ Just being so sharp about your surroundings.”

“4:44”
“‘4:44’ is a song that I wrote, and it’s the crux of the album, just right in the middle of the album. And I woke up, literally, at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44 AM, to write this song. So it became the title of the album and everything. It’s the title track because it’s such a powerful song, and I just believe one of the best songs I’ve ever written.”

“Family Feud”
“‘Family Feud’ is about separation within the culture. Like, new rappers fighting with old rappers, saying all these things. So, the line is, ‘Nobody wins when the family feuds.’”

“Bam”
“The song ‘Bam’ with Damian Marley, it’s just jammin’, it’s just like the song. But it’s secretly Shawn Carter saying, ‘Man, you need a bit of ego.’ It was because of me and the things that I’ve done, this is JAY-Z saying you needed a bit of ego for us to arrive at this point.”

“Moonlight”
“The hook is ‘We stuck in La La Land/Even if we win, we gonna lose.’ It’s like a subtle nod to La La Land winning the Oscar, and then having to give it to Moonlight. It’s really a commentary on the culture and where we’re going.”

“Marcy Me”
“‘Marcy Me’ is a nostalgic walk through Marcy, and it’s about that hopefulness, that feeling of, ‘Man, can I really do this? Can I really be one of the biggest artists in the world?’ You have these dreams, ‘Can I be one of the biggest basketball players?’ We have these dreams.”

“Legacy”
“The song is just about what it is, it’s like a verbal will. Just a song about speaking to my daughter. She starts the song off, and she says ‘Daddy, what’s a will?’”

Here Are The Songs Sampled On Jay-Z’s ‘4:44’

640x640

Kinfolks! At 12:00 a.m. EST time my favorite rapper Jay-Z dropped his highly-anticipated 13th album, 4:44, exclusively on Tidal. I am still unpacking it all, but I am here to provide you with the samples that were used in the production of the album. One thing I miss about my childhood is being able to go the corner record store and purchase cassettes and cd’s. This allowed me to read the linear notes for every album that I purchased. I always wanted to know what songs my favorite artists sampled, and I enjoyed running to my mom’s vast collection of vinyl album to hear the songs sampled. That’s kind of nerdy, but hey it is what it is! I love music! Continue reading

[WATCH] Jay-Z’s B-Sides Concert

Jay-Z’s B-Sides concert has come and gone, and I am pissed that I wasn’t in attendance, but thanks to Tidal I was able to watch it and have some semblance of being there. I’m fine with that lol!

Jay ran through some of his most famous B-Sides. True Hov fans are very familiar with these songs. Beenie Sigel & Jay-Z patched up their differences. We saw the reunion of State Property. It was good to see Beans on stage, it was touch and go when he was shot a while back.

I won’t go into extreme detail about the concert watch if for yourself HERE if you’re in that Tidal number, if not check out some flicks below:

Jay-Z Wants You To Know Tidal Is Doing Just Fine!(Tell’em Why You Mad Jay!)

tidal-logo

Jay-Z has heard your grievances, nay-saying, and general hate and he decided to give you all some vital information via Twitter(@S_C_). Y’all must have really hit a nerve because Mr. Carter rarely tweet so this is an rare. Hov had the following to say:

Tidal is doing just fine. We have over 770,000 subs. We have been in business less than one month.

We are here for the long haul. Please give us a chance to grow & get better.

There are many big companies that are spending millions on a smear campaign. We are not anti-anyone, we are pro-artist & fan.

We made Tidal for fans. We have more than just music. We have video, exclusive concerts, tickets for events early, live sports!…

….Tidal is where artists can give their fans more without the middlemen.

Indie artists who want to work directly w/ us keep 100% of their music. “If you don’t want the CEOs all in the videos” haa

Tidal pays 75% royalty rate to ALL artists, writers and producers – not just the founding members on stage.

Rich getting richer? Equity values… YouTube $390 billion. Apple $760 billion. Spotify $8 billion. Tidal $60 million.

Our actions will speak louder than words. We made Tidal to bring people the best experiences…

and to help artists give that to their fans over and over again…

We are human (even Daft Punk ha). We aren’t perfect – but we are determined.

Tidal launched in March, and I’ll be the first to say that I was skeptical about the whole music streaming thing what with Spotify and Pandora out here dominating, but the thing that might make me switch is the promise of exclusive content namely an exclusive Bey & Jay joint album. There is no way the hell I would be alright with not having first dibs on that music. I have been using Tidal for the free trial period and I like it so far. Of course there are some kinks that need to be worked out and some music missing, but I am sure all of that will be worked out with time. What I won’t me purchasing is the HiFi service, I’ll opt for the cheaper option.

Y’all really pissed Jay off #TidalFacts, he went all Mad Rapper on y’all LOL!

Is Jay-Z About To Take The Music Streaming Industry By Storm With Tidal HiFi?

That’s the question many are pondering with the announcement of Jay-Z’s Tidal High Fidelity Music Streaming Service. What makes it so different from Spotify and other music streaming services, you ask? Welp! This service is suppose to provide listener with music the way the creators intended you to hear it, with no watering it down, I suppose.

So I guess the way we have been listening to music has been all wrong all these years!?! Now I will admit, with my Beats By Dre headphones I am able to hear things that I wouldn’t normally hear on the headphones that came with my iPhone. I am assuming that’s what Tidal means. Not sure if the $25.99 per month price tag is worth it. There is a $12.99 per month option without the “HiFi” I love The Carters, Lord knows I do, but I don’t see it for $25.99, but what I will do is try it out for 30 days and see what it’s hittin on!

Of course the normal cast of characters are onboard for the launch: Beyoncé, Kanye, Rihanna, Nicki, Madonna, and so on and so forth. We shall see, check out the promo below:

BeyHive & Roc Boys Rejoice!

The Carters are said to be moving to LA according to TMZ. Blue is already enrolled in an elite private school with yearly tuition in the 15K range. Normally children start at beginning of the year, but not Blue reportedly she is starting in the middle of the year. Why? You ask, because she is a Carter!

The Carters have looked at multiples properties, but haven’t found anything fitting their needs. Hopefully the king and queen find something soon.

Matthew Knowles Says The Elevator Fight May Have Been For Publicity

IMG_0663.JPG

Papa Knowles, who has been absent from Beyoncé’s career in recent years, has an interesting theory on the whole Solangate elevator fight with Jay-Z, he seems to think that it was all done for publicity to boost On The Run ticket sales. He had this to say about the whole incident during and interview with Houston radio station:

“Sometimes ignite that tour. It’s called a Jedi Mind Trick. The Jedi Mind Trick fools you a lot of times,”

“Everybody’s talking about it. Ticket sales went up. Solange’s album sales went up 200 percent.”

I happen to agree with Matthew’s theory. The Carters(Beyoncé’s camp specifically) is very strategic when it comes to what is released. So it was very interesting and ironic that this footage was leaked right before the tour started. The whole strife in the marriage thing fits right into the whole story-line of the tour.

If you attended the concert then you know there was underlying story told by the songs, specifically when Jay-Z performed Song Cry leading right into Beyoncé singing Resentment then Love On Top. It showed that people go through up and downs in marriage and relationships. It just makes complete sense, and honestly it’s genius on the part of The Carters team!

Not sure how happy Bey is with Papa Knowles for spilling the tea where this is concerned, if in fact it is true. Matthew also hinted to a Destiny’s Child reunion as well during the interview.

Check it out below:
